I am a designer...in case you didn't realize. I did not go to school for Design (I studied Mechanical Engineering and Material Science), but I do earn my living at it now. As a designer, I've been exposed to all sorts of interesting design theory stuff. Recently I've become aware of CHI 2007 conference. I'm blogging from the conference now, where I'll be most of the week. Since I'm here, I figured it was time to build myself a Computer-Human avatar using the Cyborg Name Decoder. Check out the cyborg me:
CHI appears to be a academic leaning conference in "Computer Human Interaction". Autodesk is a first time sponsor this year, and many of our designers are in attendance. These sort of events are interesting for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that commonly accepted ideas in academia eventually become accepted in the real world - although it can take a decade or more.
Anyhow, digging around in the CHI website, I fell into a link chain that eventually led me to this video from 2006 of a newer interface (not that touchscreens are new, but they've come a long way). It make you rethink the whole mouse-keyboard-as-input idea.
It has also gotten me thinking about how cool would it be to do 3D piping design with this screen - productive models and a fun workout all at the same time! I figure some voice-recognition to input dimensions/commands and we'd have ourselves a SWEET pipe modeling system. Things like this almost make me want to go back to academia...almost.
